What is the difference between 3DoF and 6DoF (Degrees of Freedom)?
3DoF VR technology allows you to look around you in all directions but without moving through space. You can rotate your head left-right (jaw), up-down (pitch) and tilt it left-right (roll), but you can’t move through the VR environment. In 6DoF technology, you can move through the VR environment forwards and backwards, left and right, and up and down. This allows you to immerse yourself deeper into the content and experience more interaction.
EXAMPLE: In the VR film ‘Hunter-Gatherers‘ (3DoF), in the scene where the protagonists are sitting around a fire and telling stories, the 3D video allows you to feel as if you are there with them. By moving your head left and right, you can momentarily look at the person sitting to your left, then the person sitting to your right. These people appear very three-dimensional, like in real life, but it is not possible to see what is behind them. Leaning forward or back to peek at what’s behind their shoulder won’t change the picture. In 6DoF movies, by moving your head or body, you can go around characters and objects, and move through space.
The VR movie ‘Gloomy Eyes’ in the 6DoF version allows you to explore the entire imaginary world from the chair in which you are sitting. The same technology is used by some other VR films and games, in which you can move through much larger spaces.
So far, only digitally animated content can offer 6DoF, since the entire virtual space, as well as all the characters and objects in it, is created in 3D programs. This makes it possible to move the camera, i.e. the point of view, wherever you want, by translating your movements from real to virtual space via sensors in the headset. Recorded videos do not yet offer such possibilities, and it is difficult to imagine that they will ever be able to, considering this would require the camera to record reality from not only one point, but from all points of view of the environment.
In VR cinema KEK, we currently offer 15 3DoF devices and 10 6DoF devices.
VR movie ‘Gloomy Eyes’ in 6DoF version is available with narration in English, without subtitles and translation. The film with Croatian subtitles and narration in English is available in the 3DoF version.
